Over the years, Royal Canin diets have played an important role in helping our dogs thrive through the different stages of their lives.

NUTRITION AT WATERLINE´S

PROUD ROYAL CANIN AMBASSADOR

For more than 15 years, Royal Canin has been an important part of life at Waterline's. It has become a natural choice for us in both everyday feeding and our breeding programme. We value the consistency of the products, the quality of the nutrition, and the wide range of products available.

We believe good feeding starts with understanding that dogs have individual needs. Breeding dogs, growing puppies, active adults, seniors, and dogs with more specific dietary needs all benefit from thoughtful feeding and from products chosen for their particular situation. That is one of the reasons Royal Canin has remained such a good fit for us over the years.

I have also had the privilege of working with Royal Canin as an Ambassador for several years. For me, that role is built on long-term confidence, positive experiences, and the trust that comes from using the products myself over time. I only want to stand behind products that I truly feel comfortable using with my own dogs.

On this page, I share the Royal Canin foods and products that we use ourselves, as well as those we recommend in different situations, all chosen with the same goal in mind: to give our Labradors good nutrition throughout their lives.

For each product, we have included a simple overview of who it is for, when we use or recommend it, and why.

PRODUCTS WE USE & RECOMMEND

BREEDING & REPRODUCTION

ROYAL CANIN HT42D

Who? For breeding bitches in heat and early pregnancy, and also for active stud dogs.

When? We use it from the beginning of heat through the first 42 days of pregnancy, and also for stud dogs during active use and for a few months before semen freezing.

Why? We value it because it is designed specifically for reproduction, includes important nutrients such as folic acid to support the early stage of pregnancy and help reduce the risk of cleft palate, and has also worked very well for us with active stud dogs to support good semen quality, with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidant support such as vitamin E.

This product is available in Finland only through Royal Canin's PRO webshop for Royal Canin Crown Partners.

ROYAL CANIN MAXI STARTER

Who? For pregnant and lactating mothers, and for puppies during weaning.

When? We feed it to the mother from day 42 of pregnancy onwards and throughout lactation. For puppies, we use it during weaning and always until 6 weeks of age.

Why? We find it especially valuable because it meets the mother's high energy needs in late pregnancy and during lactation, helps support good milk production, and also supports the puppies' digestion, natural defences, and progress through weaning.

ROYAL CANIN PUPPY PRO TECH & BABYDOG MILK

Who? For newborn puppies that may need extra support in their first days of life in special situations, alongside the mother's milk.

When? We use Puppy Pro Tech right at the beginning, especially for vulnerable puppies or when extra early support is needed, and Babydog Milk when puppies need additional support alongside the mother's milk, for example in large litters.

Why? We use this combination because it gives early support when puppies need help getting started, and provides a milk replacer that is gentle on digestion and practical to use from birth onwards.

ROYAL CANIN BABYDOG MOUSSE

Who? For mothers during whelping, and for puppies at the beginning of weaning.

When? We use it for the mother during whelping when she may need a small, energy-rich meal, and for puppies at the beginning of weaning, usually at around 3 weeks of age.

Why? We recommend it because it offers the mother an easy, energy-rich meal during whelping, while also giving puppies a very soft and gentle start as they begin the move from milk to solid food.

ROYAL CANIN GASTROINTESTINAL PUPPY (DRY & MOUSSE)

Who? For mothers and puppies when extra digestive support is needed, especially around whelping, during lactation, or during weaning.

When? We use it for the mother after whelping if she develops diarrhoea, for example after eating placentas, and sometimes already a few days before whelping if we know she is sensitive to digestive upset at that time. We also use it during lactation if the mother develops diarrhoea, and for puppies when extra digestive support is needed during weaning or after an upset stomach.

Why? We use it because it offers gentle digestive support when the stomach needs a little extra help, and the choice of dry food or mousse makes it easy to adapt to the needs of both mother and puppies.

PUPPIES & JUNIORS

ROYAL CANIN MAXI PUPPY

Who? For growing puppies.

When? This is the food we use as our main choice for growing puppies, from 6 weeks onwards until they are ready to move on to adult food, usually at around 12–15 months of age.

Why? We use it because it offers a very good balance of quality and value, while supporting steady growth, digestion, natural defences, and the development of bones and joints in large-breed puppies.

ROYAL CANIN LABRADOR RETRIEVER PUPPY

Who? For growing Labrador puppies, especially family dogs or puppies that benefit from a slightly lighter option.

When? We use it as an alternative to Maxi Puppy from 6 weeks onwards until the puppy is ready to move on to adult food, usually at around 12–15 months of age.

Why? We recommend it because it is tailored specifically for Labrador Retriever puppies, with a more moderate energy content and support for bones, joints, and digestion.

ROYAL CANIN MAXI PUPPY ACTIVE

Who? For growing puppies and juniors that need more energy to stay in good body condition.

When? We use it from around 6 months of age onwards when needed, often depending on the season and especially during the winter months, until the dog is ready to move on from puppy food to adult food, usually at around 15–18 months of age.

Why? We use it because it is an excellent option for growing dogs that need more energy than a standard puppy food provides, while still supporting steady growth, joint development, a healthy coat, and good overall condition.

This product is available in Finland only through Royal Canin's PRO webshop for Royal Canin Crown Partners.

ROYAL CANIN GASTROINTESTINAL PUPPY (DRY & MOUSSE)

Who? For puppies from the age of leaving for their new home up to 12 months of age, when extra digestive support is needed.

When? We use it when a puppy has digestive upset, for example after eating something unsuitable outdoors, or when the stomach otherwise needs a gentler diet and extra support. The mousse can be especially helpful when nausea affects appetite.

Why? We use it because young puppies are often more prone to digestive upset while both their immune and digestive systems are still developing, and this food offers gentle, highly digestible support when the stomach needs a little extra help.

ROYAL CANIN MAXI ADULT EXPERT

ROYAL CANIN LABRADOR RETRIEVER ADULT

Who? For adult Labrador Retrievers from around 12–15 months of age onwards, especially for family dogs or dogs that benefit from a slightly lighter option. Hint: Practical to use as training treats due to the big kibble size.

When? We use it as an alternative to standard adult foods when a dog needs support in maintaining a healthy weight and good condition.

Why? We use and recommend it because it has a more moderate energy content, includes more fibre to help create a feeling of fullness, and has a larger kibble size that encourages chewing. It also supports bones and joints, skin and coat health.

ROYAL CANIN SPORTING LIFE ENRGY 4300

Who? For active adult dogs that need more energy to maintain good condition.

When? We use it when dogs need more energy and fat to stay in good condition, often depending on the season and especially during the winter months, and for dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors.

Why? We use it because it has proven to be a very reliable option for maintaining condition in active dogs, supports excellent coat quality, and has been one of our trusted foods, especially during the winter months.

ROYAL CANIN SHOW BEAUTY LARGE DOG

Who? For adult dogs, especially show dogs where coat quality is a priority.

When? We recommend it when extra support for coat quality and skin condition is needed.

Why? We recommend it because its nutritional profile supports skin health and coat quality, helping to improve shine, maintain a healthy skin barrier, and reduce dandruff, while also helping dogs stay in very good overall condition.

This product is available in Finland only through Royal Canin's PRO webshop for Royal Canin Crown Partners.

ROYAL CANIN DIGESTIVE CARE MAXI

Who? For adult dogs with sensitive digestion.

When? We recommend it for dogs that are prone to digestive sensitivity or inconsistent stool quality.

Why? We recommend it because it supports digestive health with highly digestible proteins, fibres, and prebiotics, helping to maintain balanced digestion and good stool quality.

ROYAL CANIN LABRADOR RETRIEVER STERILISED ADULT

Who? For sterilised adult and senior Labrador Retrievers.

When? We recommend it when a dog's energy needs have decreased after sterilisation and weight control becomes more important.

Why? We recommend it because it has a more moderate energy content to help with weight control, contains plenty of fibre to help create a feeling of fullness, supports bones and joints, and includes nutrients that promote healthy skin and coat, while the kibble shape also encourages chewing.

ROYAL CANIN GASTROINTESTINAL (DRY & MOUSSE)

Who? For adult dogs when extra digestive support is needed.

When? We use it when an adult dog has digestive upset or needs a gentler diet for a period of time. The mousse can be especially helpful when nausea affects appetite.

Why? We use it because adult dogs can also need extra digestive support from time to time, and this food offers gentle, highly digestible nutrition when the stomach needs a little extra help.

SENIORS

ROYAL CANIN LABRADOR RETRIEVER 5+

Who? For mature Labrador Retrievers from 5 years of age onwards, especially family dogs moving into their senior years.

When? We recommend it when an older Labrador would benefit from a breed-specific food adapted to the changing needs that come with age.

Why? We recommend it because it is designed specifically for ageing Labradors, with support for weight management, bones and joints, digestion, and healthy ageing, while the kibble is also shaped to encourage chewing.

ROYAL CANIN MAXI AGEING +5

Who? For dogs from 5 years of age onwards.

When? We recommend it when a dog is moving into its later adult years and would benefit from a food adapted to that stage of life.

Why? We recommend it because it is made for mature large dogs and supports their changing needs with particular attention to digestion, bones and joints, healthy ageing, and overall wellbeing.

ROYAL CANIN MAXI AGEING 8+

Who? For dogs from 8 years of age onwards.

When? We recommend it when a dog has reached its senior years and would benefit from a food adapted to ageing.

Why? We recommend it because it is designed for senior large dogs and supports healthy ageing, digestion, bones and joints, and overall vitality.

SPECIAL PRODUCTS

ROYAL CANIN PILL ASSIST

Who? For dogs from around 6 weeks of age onwards when medication needs to be given more easily.

When? We use it when giving deworming tablets or other medication, especially if a dog is unwell, nauseous, or not eating particularly well. For Labradors, the Medium/Large Dog version is usually the right choice.

Why? We use it because the soft, mouldable texture makes tablets easy to hide, it is very tasty, and its appealing smell often encourages even an unwell dog to take it. It is also pleasant and easy to handle for the person giving the medication.

This is a Royal Canin Veterinary product.

ROYAL CANIN TRAINIG TREATS

Who? For dogs over 6 months of age that need a small and practical reward during training.

When? We use it for everyday training, rewarding, and small moments of positive reinforcement when we want something easy and consistent to keep on hand.

Why? We use it because it is easy to choose a training treat from the same brand without having to think about endless other options, our dogs like its texture, smell, and taste, and it is also a lighter option for repeated use during training thanks to its small size and lower calorie content.

ROYAL CANIN VETERINARY TREATS (SATIETY, GASTROINTESTINAL, HYPOALLERGENIC & URINARY)

Who? For dogs that are on a special veterinary diet and need suitable treats, for example Satiety for weight management, Gastrointestinal for digestive support, Hypoallergenic for food sensitivities, and Urinary for urinary support.

When? We recommend these when a dog is being fed a compatible Royal Canin veterinary diet and the owner wants to use treats without moving away from that feeding plan.

Why? We recommend them because they make it easier to reward a dog while staying consistent with the intended diet, whether the focus is weight management, digestion, food sensitivity, or urinary support.

AT THE ROYAL CANIN CAMPUS

In 2025, we had the pleasure of attending Royal Canin Pro Exchange Forum in southern France as part of our Royal Canin Ambassador journey, and of visiting the Royal Canin Campus near Montpellier. Listening to presentations from professionals across the pet world and seeing the campus firsthand made the experience both inspiring and educational.

Seeing the campus and learning more about the work behind the products gave us valuable insight and deepened our confidence in the nutrition we use and recommend. It also gave us a strong sense of the warmth, teamwork, and shared commitment behind the brand, all for the wellbeing of our much-loved pets. In our own role, it is a pleasure to feel part of that wider Royal Canin community.
